Discovering Simple Living

Since moving to Southern Italy I have adapted to a simpler lifestyle. This includes not eating any fast food or ordering any food for delivery. Partly because I do enjoy cooking, but mostly because this modern concept of food being delivered directly to your front door simply does not exist where I am.

This did anger me I won’t lie! Especially when I felt hungry and lazy and wanted a quick meal that I didn’t need to cook for myself. Oh, how I longed for the days when I lived in a big city. Those beautiful days when I could scroll through the deliveroo app and order anything I craved instantly, at the tap of a button.

However, after some self-reflection (that dreaded Italian lockdown) I now consider not having access to anything fast & convenient a blessing in disguise.

I have experienced what most people only dream of. I have succeeded at time-travel! Well living in Southern Italy definitely feels like I have stepped back into time. Back to the 1800s it seems. Way before apps and technology (no deliveroo or uber eats here) and before processed food existed. A time when people ate what was local to them and in season.

However not being able to have whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted it has allowed me to educate myself about what’s in season, finesse my cooking skills and improve my diet.

I now eat only seasonal food unless I travel to somewhere I can find a Thai restaurant (my other favourite food) and then I indulge. But until my next trip, I will continue to cook my favourite seasonal Italian recipes and share them on this blog.
